I've had mine for just over a week now, and they were *very* sore the first couple days, and now are pretty okay. I can chew soft/medium things like cakes or pasties or fried chips and the like..

I use wax but mostly on the wire that is starting to come through at the back.. it's kind of sharp, and catches on my cheek/tongue sometimes. also my wire isn't joined on to two brackets yet at the bottom, and it's starting to rub against inside my lips a lot... and I can't put wax there because there is nothing for it to hold on to!

other than that I've not really had a need for the wax yet. Im sure it just changes as your treatment goes. :) good luck with your new braces though!
