I am almost 22 and you are right, headgear is not a lot of fun. My doctor said 10-12 hours a day was about the minimum for me to be useful and if I only wear it that minimum amount I will still get there but my whole treatment will just take longer. I just do the best I can. Fortunately, if you want to call spending my college years with braces fortunate, I can often wear it longer since I can wear it around the house when I'm not at school without making a public spectacle of myself. It does take some time to get used to but it won't hurt after a while - (elastics were worse!) If there's another way, go for it but if you have to stick with headgear, it is working for me.
