I have TMJ too. I've undergone splint therapy with 4 different dentists. The first guy I saw was supposed to be a TMJ "expert", but his treatment gave me an open anterior bite. His splints increased my symptoms 10 fold. The next guy was a general DDS who left me hanging after splint therapy b/c he didn't know what to do with me. The 3rd "specialist" I saw only treats TMJ, and he expected my bite to close up with splint therapy and stay there. That didn't work and he suggested Orthognathic surgery. I did lots of research and after reading horror stories about it on another site, decided against it. Then, I decided to see a functional orthodontist. He claims that Orthognathic surgery is usually for cosmetic reasons, but that's not what I've read. Anyway, I've had my upper braces for a month now. I should be getting the lower ones in a couple of months or so. This Ortho thinks that the braces will alleviate my TMJ symptoms, but sometimes I think that my headaches are stress-related and I'll just end up with a nice smile AND the headaches. I'll have to wait and see what happens. Don't feel bad about how old you are. I'm probably older than all of you!!!!!
