I haven't hand bumpers but I had something very similar except that it was removable. I had a bite plate that fit in like a lower retainer and had a thick plastic section in the back on top of my lower teeth. I had an upper lateral that sat behind the lowers and the only way to get it up to the front was to keep my teeth apart in the front. Soooo annoying, but at least I got to take it out to eat. Christina, you are probably talking about bite buttons. The one I've seen are L shaped and they are glued to the back of the two front teeth. The lower teeth hit the L part and keep the teeth from sliding up behind the uppers. I've also seen removable appliances like an upper retainer that has a thick section behind the front teeth that works the same way. The only thing I can say is that either way, the teeth hitting the bumper can get tender because of the weird unusual pressure it causes on them but its worth it. Just keep in mind that EVERYTHING done to you during the braces stage is temporary. Good Luck!
