I'm not sure miserable is the word but it's pretty likely your teeth will be tender (at best) and you won't be able to eat what you ordinarily would. Also, you'll be spending some time learning your new cleaning routine. I got mine on two weeks ago and I'm glad I was at home where I could cook what I want and puree the heck out of everything. If you can put off the braces until you get back, you'll probably be glad you did.
