Subject: latex allergy? (dr. rick?)

Hi,

I have latex elastics. For awhile I had them with no problems. Now I'm wearing them on my upper canines (in a triangle with bottom teeth). They touch my lips now (they didn't before).

After just 4 hours at a time with the elastics on, my lips get very swollen. The swelling lasts for several hours after the elastics are removed, and my lips continue to be sore and sensitive.

I've never had problems with latex in the past--could I have just now developed an allergy to it, or is this a normal reaction to rubbing from the elastics?

Should I ask my orthodontist for non-latex elastics? And if those cause the same reaction, are there other treatment options?

Thanks for any info,

Kami
