Hi Mark,

I'm 27 and have had terribly crooked teeth and an overbite all my life that I've absolutely hated and always wanted to get fixed, but for reasons very similar to your own never did until a couple of years ago.

I went to my usual dentist and told him what I wanted my teeth fixed, and he referred me to the Eastman Dental Hospital in London for an initial consultation, which took about a month. At the consultation the orthodontist told me what treatment would be needed to fix my teeth (basically a year to 18 months in braces, then surgery to bring my bottom jaw forward to meet the top) and that the waiting list at that point was a year.

That was really depressing news, as I felt I'd come so far just to be told to wait again, but as I knew I'd fianlly be getting my hated teeth that had caused me so much embarrassment and discomfort over the years fixed, I waited as patiently as I could. Then about a year ago, I had my wisdom teeth removed at the hospital to make room for my teeth to move, and then three weeks later the brace went on. I've had it for ten months now and the change is remarkable - my teeth are now neatly alighed, when before they were protruding at all angles with massive gaps between them.

Next stage for me is the surgery, some time before the end of the year, because though my teeth are now 'straight' my smile is still not right due to the considerable protrusion of my upper jaw. Noy looking forward to the surgery particularly, but so much looking forward to be able to smile for the first time in my life without covering my mouth. And that's essentially why I've gone through all the bother, because two years of hassle is othing compared to finally liking my teeth and not being ashamed for other people to see them. I'd truly recommend doing this to anyone.

PS - I am unemployed, so all of this dental treatment has been free on the NHS.
