I feel the same way when it comes to trying not to smile often and learning to talk without showing much teeth. People who don't have teeth issues don't understand the emotional toll that this process takes on a person. Good for you Jo, that you feel better about yourself. Although, from reading your posts I can tell you are a wonderful amazing woman, with or without crooked teeth :) Good luck to you in all you do! I hope to someday be feeling the self esteem boost that you are currently experiencing.

Hi there JJ, it's weird after having the braces off I
>have met new people who a) didn't know me with crooked
>teeth and also b) didn't know me with braces either,
>and I feel I am very confident when talking to them.
>Some people who knew me before and during braces
>didn't even notice the braces were off (thanks
>mum-in-law!!!!)
>I feel like a new person, but still the same, its hard
>to explain. When talking face to face with people I
>used to think they were looking at my horrible teeth
>(they were) and then looking at my braces (they
>definatley were I couldn't abstain from curry!!...glow
>in the dark green/yellow isn't very flattering!), now
>when I talk closely to people they are engaging me
>right in the eyes (sometimes feels a little
>uncomfortable, especially when they are male....I'm
>not used to this!)
>Anyway, other people who have known me a long time,
>say I am smiling ALL the time (I tried not to before)
>talk more (is that a good thing?) and seem somehow
>younger in my attitude and the way I carry
>myself.......it all seems to be good!
>I had very very low self-esteem before, painfully so,
>I don't think people who haven't gone through this
>process know what it means to us to decide to do this
>and what deep-rooted issues surround the way we see
>ourselves, it isn't just vanity.
