I've had my braces on for nine months, ceramics upper and lower. The first week or two was the worst, but I found a trick that really helps!
Find chewing gum called Stickfree or Freedent. (CVS Pharmacy carries Stickfree, and you can buy Freedent by the case at Sam's Club!) Break a stick in half and chew (gently, if you have to!) after getting your braces put on, after getting new wires and ligatures, or whenever having pain from tooth movement. I have found that putting light pressure on the teeth after having something done will actually lessen the time that the teeth hurt.
I do this every time I go to my orthodontist and usually by the next day my mouth is not sore anymore.
Some dentists say it's okay to chew gum, a few say it is not, but after nine months of chewing gum almost every day, I have never had gum get stuck in my brackets or break off a bracket. I did have a band pop off once, but that was due to Doritos!!
