Like you, I have an open bite with only my second molars, and on one side first molars, touching (most of those have onlays now either due to fracture or to prevent fracture).
Has your orthodontist discussed surgery? That is often used to correct open bites (and was suggested in my case by an ortho; I have been reluctant to go with that). Also, a prostho suggested replacing the crowns and shaving a few teeth down a bit to close the bite (again, I've been reluctant, since once you shave teeth down, even by a few millimeters or less, they don't grow back, in case the bite feels off). I have read on the web about the use of implants to intrude molars to close open bites in adults (there is an ortho in Florda doing that; otherwise mostly people in Asia). The published results seem amazing. That would be my preferred option...but not many people doing that yet, and not a lot of case histories.
Pulling four more teeth, especially molars, seems brutal, though I've heard that lots of people live in first molar occlusion. Just curious, though: In my case, although its only a total of 6 molars touching, the bicuspids are less close together than the cuspids, for instance. So my bite seems to gradually "open more". Is that the case with you as well? If so, wouldn't the ortho still have to intrude some teeth, or extrude others?
Hah, our names are almost identical!
