The springs really aren't that bad. They are about as uncomfortable as the rest of this process. I had an open coil (there are open coils and closed coils) between my top right front tooth and the cuspid beside it to push them apart and make room for the upper right lateral to come up into its place. You'll find that the most annoying thing about the spring is that it leaves a weird impression on your lip on the inside. You'll probably have nights when you sleep in a way that really pushes it into your lip. And food just LOVES to wrap itself around inside that coil making it a bear to clean. But we're not talking PAIN here, just a pain in the butt. Right now I also have a closed coil to maintain a space between a couple of molars. Just all part of the process, you'll be fine. Promise.
