I have my cleanings every three months, as I had a "deep cleaning" prior to the braces being put on. My doc scrapes away each time, then applies some sort of a medication to help the gums. He NEVER uses floss, but cleans each tooth thoroughly by scraping. I never questioned it, and my ortho says that my teeth are spotless so he must be doing ok.
I know that some people have even scheduled adjustments and cleanings for the same day. They go in the morning, have the archwire removed, go for the cleaning sans archwire, then go back to the ortho for the actual adjustment.
Maybe something to consider, especially if you are only going every 6 months.
