While I don’t know if “fiddling” with brackets will impede progress, I sympathize. I have developed some pretty bad habits too – and I didn’t even notice! It’s embarrassing as my co-workers have pointed them out to me.

The one I do the most - my tongue tends to flick back and forth over the hooks of the back brackets. Probably not a bad thing when home; but definitely not a good thing when bored in a meeting.

The one I do a lot when I’m in front of the computer - I lean into my bent left arm that is resting on the table, placing my chin on my thumb, and my in index finger over my top lip [think Freud] and then I play/feel the brackets from the outside, over the skin. Looks really weird to the person standing in my office doorway.

And worst of all…..I previously had a perfect bite and am wearing braces for a different reason. As such, my teeth have slightly shifted and things aren’t aligning as before – which is very new for me. I find I constantly clench my teeth to get this “snap – crackle - pop” [yes, similar to Rice Krispies cereal] effect from teeth trying to meet.

I have a suspicion that putting more undue stress on the cheek muscles or gums isn’t very beneficial, but I don’t know if I would go so far as to say its doing damage. I think it might be giving me more headaches, than anything.

Don’t despair. I bet you’ll wake up one morning very soon and see the result of movement which took its sweet time, but seemed to appear all of a sudden. It seems like your halfway there!
