I had never used a water-pik before getting my braces 3 weeks ago, and let me tell you -- I can't imagine not using one once the braces come off.

They do help with the pain a bit but more than that, they make your teeth feel clean -- because for me, brushing doesn't accomplish that anymore. The Water-Pik really gets out food particles that are stuck.

I either mix Listerine with the water, or baking soda -- both help my mouth feel cleaner, and the baking soda gets the coffee/wine stains off of my ligatures.
