I have this problem too. I've had braces for only 2 weeks now. When I bite to eat, I have to bite wrong (it's like a slight overbite/crossbite now) in order to chew. In the first week of getting braces though, I couldn't bite at all because I had an overbite. I guess I adapted and my bite has gotten "worse" as you've mentioned. A lot of it is because I'm so used to my original wrong bite I think. When I'm not eating though, I don't really bite down. And when I sleep, I try my best not to bite down even though sometimes it's a reflex.
