The prospect of having a huge gap can be very daunting.
Although I did not have an expander, I had two upper first bicuspids extracted, which caused two gaps. My ortho is pulling my canines backwards and this is causing two gaps between my canines and laterals. Quite frankly, I look like a jack-o-lantern. I am more self-conscious of the gaps than the braces themselves. However, I have not had anyone comment on my pumpkin face. Just goes to show that it only bothers me. My family, friends and co-workers could care less about my braces and all the gaps.
