I had full metal (although I only had braces on top) at age 32 and I was happy with them. I didn't have face-to-face dealings with the public in my job but I did have many meetings with professionals, as well as giving presentations etc. No one took any notice of the braces - in fact a few colleagues only noticed them when they'd been on for two months.

As for my immediate colleagues, they knew well in advance that I was getting them and we all spent time together thinking up the best nicknames! Tinsel-teeth was the favourite. They didn't actually call me that, but it helped to show them that I wasn't worried about getting them and that it was okay to make jokes. When I got them put on I felt self-conscious for about two minutes before people saw them, but after that it was fine. And pretty soon I was so used to them that it surprised me when people noticed.

My only advice is, whether you get metal or ceramic, do NOT schedule any business lunches for the first week or so. It takes a while to get used to eating and your teeth may be a bit sore too, so better to wait if you can.

Good luck with the decision.
