>My advice is if you have a very bad bite and want to avoid future problems with wearing down teeth and periodontal problems, then do it. I have a 15mm overbite and retracted lower jaw and braces and surgery is the way I am going because of these. I want to keep my own teeth (I'm 39), and the cosmetic improvement will be a bonus. Talk to the oral/maxillofacial surgeon your ortho refers you to and check the website mentioned by Caiden for advice on pain etc. I can't advise on insurance companies because it is different in Australia, but with my cover I'm up for about $8000 Australian dollars in out of pocket costs after refunds. My fund covers my hospital stay, prosthetics and theatre costs at 100% but all up and not including these, my braces, surgery, anaesthetist, and splints and other items comes to around $14000 Australian dollars. Yes, it will be worth it. If you have been self-conscious of your teeth for as long as I have, and have supportive friends and family then go for it. I know there is going to be some difficult times ahead after my surgery but just as with braces I will need to take one day at a time and stay positive. By the way, I'm in my third week of braces and have 8 and a half months to go until my surgery and another 9 months in braces afterwards. Hope this helps.

Well I have been told today by my ortho that there's
>really no way out of getting jaw surgery along with
>braces. So any advice would be great. How painful? How
>much does it generally cost? It's to align my bottom
>jaw and fix my overbite ... do insurance companies
>usually consider this to be cosmetic surgery (and
>therefore won't help pay)? Thanks for any help you can
>give.
