>The glue used to attach the brackets to your teeth forms a sealed bond so that nothing whatsoever gets under the brackets. That is why using a whitening toothpaste is not recommended: you could not whiten under the brackets, so that part of your teeth wouldn't match the rest when you remove the braces. The white spots caused by plaque and tartar are scars on the enamel and are permanent. That is why major cleaning is required for braces wearers, to clean away the plaque that finds lots of hiding places in the crevices of the brackets and wires. Tartar is just hardened plaque. In fact, I had so much plaque that it made white deposits on my brackets and cemented the wires into the bracket grooves and made the brackets very hard to open and close! I ended up brushing a full five minutes after each eating, flossing morning and night, using Listerine with every brushing, and using the prescription toothpaste at bedtime! I did get it under control and I have no enamel damage or cavities now that my braces are off.
