Thanks, Jim. After reading your reply (and with the words "very infected" echoing in my ears) I called my dentist's office and described the situation, and they wanted me to come in right away. Turns out it was a pointy part of the jaw bone that had grown up beside the former wisdom tooth. I guess I couldn't really feel it until the gum swelling came down. So he injected a local and filed it off for me, no charge.
