I got my metal braces at 56 after putting them off for 40 years! I was okay with my few crooked teeth until the bad bite began to wear them dangerously and chomp on the inside of my mouth! Then I decided braces were less expensive and scary than implants or bridges later.

But my point here is that at first I kept unconsciously reaching up to clear the irritant out of my mouth. I have not got used to them as most people do and I have had a lot of pain and haven't chewed for almost 10 months. The results are somewhat disappointing as my gums compressed between teeth and left black triangles. So I can tell you from experience that having braces was the pits!

BUT I still have straight teeth that will work efficiently and last the rest of my life and healthy gums that will remain so since I can clean them easily. It was a smart and healthy thing to do and managable because it is temporary for results that will last a lifetime (with retainers every night). So now I am ready to deband, I give to you my mantra: "This is temporary misery for permanent results!" I bet I said that to myself a million times. There are people our age who are having a very easy time: maybe you will be one of those! But, if not, remember: it's temporary misery for permanent results!
