Richard, try not to worry, especially about what people will think. I have a fairly public job as well (I'm a journalist and do a lot of interviewing)and NO ONE ever notices my braces or comments on them. My own brother didn't notice them until I mentioned them.

I can't tell you you won't be in pain, because obviously some people, like Dea, have had a rough time with their braces. But I think it's more usual that nearly all of the pain will be gone after the first couple of weeks. Chances are they will go on just fine and that they will be no more than a minor annoyance while you get your teeth straightened out. And afterwards you'll be thrilled that you went through with it.
