Hi Richard,

I think it's pretty normal to feel conflicted. I also want straight teeth, but not the braces! I was surprised at how much I hated them when I first got them on. There are obviously a lot of issues that go along with the braces (feeling like your mouth is full of junk, having to adjust the way you speak, difficulty eating, discomfort, wires poking your mouth, etc) and there are many times I've just felt like getting a pair of plyers and ripping them out...

BUT if I had known what a hassle they were going to be before I got them, I still would have gone through with it. I've had them on for 6 weeks now, and I'm FINALLY at the point where they aren't bothering me any more. It's not so bad. I'm confident that the next 2 years will fly by, and I'll have the teeth I always wanted. It's better than the alternative--a lifetime of wishing I had gone through with it, hating the way my teeth look.

Your biggest fear (that people will react negatively) is probably going to be of very little concern if/when you go through with it. I think most people here (including me) have had pretty positive responses from others. Generally, people either don't notice at all, or it's no big deal to them. Several people have asked me a lot of questions because they themselves have been considering braces but have never seen an adult wearing them until they saw me. I work with severely emotionally disturbed kids, who are brutally honest (and often cruel) and they think the braces are just great. So don't worry what other people will think. The response is usually very positive.

Good luck with your decision!
