Up until my first adjustment I had brackets on all my teeth, but the back four were not connected to the archwires. My wisdom teeth were removed just before treatment. As of two weeks ago I got a thicker wire that's connected to all my teeth - ouch! I sure wish they had wired up all my teeth with the small wire in the first place, so I wouldn't have had to deal with the pain of jumping from no wire to a .016 on my back teeth.

Does anyone have any idea why they do this? I'm wondering whether it was because there's some sort of ratchet mechanism in the brackets on my back molars that holds the wire in place, whereas my first wire could slide back and forth, as if my brackets were a string of beads. (I have Damon brackets.) Not sure why this would be advantageous, though.
