First of all, your life is not over! You are 16 and you have many many years left to live... wouldn't you rather do that with straight, beautiful, healthy teeth instead of crooked teeth and eventually dentures?

I do understand how you feel. I needed braces as a teen but wouldn't even consider the idea (and in those days they were full metal bands around every tooth). It took me until I was 32 to be okay with the idea (I had metal braces, by the way) and I can tell you I REALLY wish I'd done it earlier. For one thing, if I'd done it as a teen it wouldn't have been ME forking out the money... :-) Plus I wouldn't have had all those years of turning at a certain angle in photos to minimise the way my teeth looked, all those years of not smiling widely and all those years of envying other people's straight teeth.

I'll be straight. It may be uncomfortable at times to wear braces and there may be times when you regret it. For myself, I found that those times were in a definite majority. Sometimes my teeth hurt, sometimes I couldn't eat what I wanted, the constant cleaning was a pain. However, I concentrated on how great my smile would look when I finished and now that I'm out of braces I can tell you that it was 100% worth it. No question in my mind. I feel like a million dollars and I can't believe I didn't do it earlier.

As for your Senior photos, you can get the photographer to airbrush the braces out of the photo. No problem; heaps of people get that done.

My advice: go into this with a positive attitude. Concentrate on how great your smile will look. Take a photo of your teeth every month so you can see the changes. If you start off by thinking this is the worst thing in the world, it will be! Remember you are taking steps to change yourself for the BETTER. And when you want to have a moan or you have some questions, come to this forum. It helps to unload and get things in perspective.

Good luck and remember that new smile you're helping to create!!

Sue Ellen
