I can agree partly with this assessment, especially with the psychology crap. But everybody knows it is impossible for a journalist to interview Bobby Fischer, so that criticisms is invalid. The authors interviewed many other people who knew Fischer personally. With all the information Fischer's portrait is getting more and more qualified, with a lot of nuances. The Russian part in the story is now explained in detail with a thorough portrayal of Spasski.

By the way, according to the authors Spasski is indeed anti-Semitic. They submit to Spasski’s admiration for Dostojevski. Spasski speaks of himself as a "righteous" anti-Semitic, whatever that means. Maybe I give the wrong translation of "righteous", I have to look that up.

No, with all the justifiably criticisms I still find it a very valuable book. But I’m not the average reader and I will only advise the book to somebody who is specially interested in Fischer.
