In FR and MR there is no tracking, however there is a scent discrimination in MR similar to the one present in AKC obedience at whatever level the AKC has it at. The difference being the scent articles can be in some random place like under a table or in a fire pit or something wierd, it's up to the judge, those are just where mine were when I trialed. FR and MR are not divided up like the 3 seprate sections in schutzhund, it is all done at once, you go from jumps to obedience to protection with no breaks. FR and MR test some things better than schutzhund, like environmental stability and the ability to think and problem solve during protection, but it is weaker at testing active aggression and grip quality. I have tons of pictures up on my website if you would like to see some examples. As for training the bitework, most people train the dogs to bite legs, done properly this is just like the succession for training schutzhund arms using 2 leg sleeves that can be slipped like a arm sleeve. Once they have good bite placement technique on the leg sleeves, understand the out/guard etc. and are *ready* mentally, then they go onto the suit- which is a very different timeline for each dog. Ideally we use dogs that get their pleasure from fighting with the decoy and reward them for countering with movement of the decoy inside the suit, they love it, dogs working entirely in prey have a hard time with the lack of a prey object to carry as a reward for correct behavior (or initiating fighting-like behavior) at higher levels unless their prey drive is incredibly high like a mali, which in dobermanns it is usually not. Most schutzhund convert dogs are taught upper body bites since the dogs are more comfortable biting there since that was their foundation. Again good technique teaches them to bite in the armpit area on the front and back of the suit, we don't want them "chasing the arms".
Hope this helps, P.S. Who is Mike's bitch out of, she looks like a Weyermuehle.
