Yes, there were offshoots from the Jewish religion... Christ lead one himself. Catholics were considered a cult at one time too.

It would be neat if the Church established by Christ had been re-established on the earth, however, I believe that someone with more worthiness will probably do that. Joseph Smith was a conman and admitted to the fact himself. (I'll clear that up for you.) He admitted that he was a treasure hunter. Treasure hunters in the 1800's around western new york were bent on trying to find precious metals, relics and gold. They were often seen as public nuisances and frauds. Any person who used a mediumship such as a seer stone during that time period received much skepticism. It wasn't until the 1950's to 1970's that mediumship was given some level of credibility and tests were created for a medium to prove his/her abilities. Joseph Smith lived in a time when there were no measurable ways to prove whether he really possessed a talent to treasure hunt. Statistically, very few people who were treasure hunters, actually found any significant treasure. Joseph Smith described that he earned $14 a month while a treasure hunter, which leads me to believe that he must have conned people. There simply wasn't enough treasure for him to make that much money a month. Certainly if God were planning to restore His Church on this earth, he would have chosen a better canidate.
