I think Ring teaches GREAT basics for Mondio. Our club here is training in both. But, first we train for Ring. I think it is very difficult to teach a dog ALL the different possibilities that there are in Mondio AT FIRST. Take the defense of handler for instance. In Ring, the decoy comes forward, shakes your hand, walks past you, takes five steps, turn around catches you and hits you. The dog bites, you out the dog, the dog guards and you recall... Its the same at all trials. It will start to vary at the two and three level with additional pressure from the decoy, but it will basically be the same. A dog can handle that. And can learn THAT. THEN throw in two decoys, funny hats, crazy alligators, gun fire... BUT FIRST, train the basic defense...
When the dogs are puppies, show them everything under the sun, but teach them basics. I have a FR II, MR I GSD, and this has worked for us... I am also saying that if you do BOTH sports, you have a bunch more options for trialing! You can do FR, and MR... They are BOTH good. FR has more of a dog vs man component, and MR has more of a dog vs environmental component... MAN, if only Compagne were in the US!!! NOW we are talking!!!
Anyway, these are just my opinions... Thanks for letting me air that out.
Jeff
