Regarding the willingness of the News Media to cover the civil rights story in the 1960's: It is critical to remember how important this issue was in the context of the cold war. The US legal Jim Crow structure was a profound problem and embarrassment in establishing relationships with Asian and African countries emerging from Colonial Status, and it was very much in the National Interest to eliminate Jim Crow laws as part of the larger confrontation with the Soviet Union and general Marxist Ideology. Without question National Media understood this connection, and the coverage served to convince mainstream Americans of the need for change, thus creating popular support for much legislation, the court decisions, and the popular movements such as King's SCLC and the work of the NAACP. Ironically in much of the south, Network Coverage was censored with few of the special programs such as CBS Reports or NBC's White Papers available there, thus much persuasion material was only directed toward the North and West. This did not really change till the mid-60's when FCC challenges to licenses were mounted.

I am writting a paper on the media and how it influenced the protests during the 1960 era. I am searching for sources to support the fact that the media attention to these causes made the general population of America aware and compassionate.
Can anyone help? My paper is due Tuesday.
Thanks-
Vikki
