I'll try to answer you, Mitch. An out-of-town DJ, who is V-tracked, will never invite people top call in their requests. Sure enough, they'll give out the temperature because they can get those off the National Weather Sevice wires. They can give the time if they know the zones into which they are braodcasting, and anyone can give away prizes by V-tracking something like, "be the twelfth caller now and win tickets to Jewel at the Delta Center" because their PD at the affiliate told them to. Gee I can do that too: "Call in now and we'll (never "I'll", another hint) give you a thousand dollars to the fifteenth caller, just fopr keeping it here on KISS FM!" You'll NEVER hear them saying something like, "I caught the Paul Simon show at the E center last night and he sounds like it's time to consider a career as a music critic because he just doesn't have the pipes anymore," or anything you might hear a Tom Barberi say that sounds like someone who lives here would say because they grew up here and drive here and work and play here.

It's really easy to say things like "we," "our" and so on and those are clues they are speaking for a corporation instead of to an audience in a town they actually know anything about! Very canned, phony and cheap sounding to me. Here's another clue: do you ever hear a V-tracked DJ announce who will be "up next" after their own show? Or give thanks to the DJ on before them and what great guy or lady they are and what a great job they did before he came on? Anything that sounds like there is station cameraderie or that they know anything about themselves, other then the same station call signs they must say daily in common? There are a few ways you can tell. No one answering the phone when you call the station is another one.
