I know Rosen is slightly different since he does live in Salt Lake, but clues are the fact that he never takes callers, and that his show requires you to e-mail in your answer to the contest. Then he "draws" a winner out of the "hopper." You can do that in the production room when you're recording the lines.

I never caught onto the whole "we" vs. "I" thing. I'll have to keep an eye, err ear out for that.

Not to bring up KSOP again, but I was listening again today and it just "sounded live." I don't know how to describe it. Maybe volumes levels are different for different live DJs, vs. an automation system that makes them all the same? Also what he said was different, but I bet if you took the sentance structure apart, you can't find anything.

What's wierd about voicetracking, is it "just doesn't sound right."

For example, it took me a while to catch onto the fact that "Romeo" was voicetracked/cybertracked on KISN 97 last fall. But I was starting to get hints because he seemed so incredible boring. Too perfect, too polished, even mistakes were just "too good." Plus he never interacted with the listeners. He was about as useful as a sweeper. Didn't provide anything more than a computer could've done, except sound better.

At least a real DJ can take phone calls, answer questions, provide entertainment, sometimes very spontaneously. Make mistakes, and try to cover up for them live. It's funny, and sometimes (in moderation) make your evening as you listen to them.

Let's say that a minor earthquake happens. Not really big enough to set off all the EAS stuff, but big enough that it startles you.

It can be quite comforting to all of a sudden hear the DJ stop the song and reassure you that everything's all right and that information can be passed along as soon as possible. (See Lance Ballance's web page, as a prime example of how he handled the LA Quake). Then the DJ can (although breaking orders) perhaps adjust the playlist. If a song like Disco Inferno is up next, you probably don't want to play that. Also you can take phone calls, and remind people to turn their gas off. Provide a public service. After all radio should be treated as something a bit different than your regular ol' McDonalds. Radio should be somewhat "public service" oriented. Sure you need to make a profit, but you are there to provide something to the community as well. In a disaster, you're station may save lives. That's a rare event, but you never know.

However on a voicetracked station, no information is passed on, and unless the janitor comes in and stops it himself, and starts going on the air, you may forget to turn your gas off.

Anyway, that's just one scenario where a radio station can be a wonderful tool, at a bit of sacrifice in profits. If stations go bankrupt, there are always people looking to buy.

Basically it takes three things to make a station successful:
1. Good Signal
2. Excellent Programming
3. Good Sales Rates, Staff

I think the groups do a pretty good job at getting 1 and 3 going (KOSY's signal is excellent by the way), but I think they're too easy to let #3 overrun #2. If you can't afford an airstaff, you can't afford the station, and you should sell it to someone who can afford it. Period.

Anyway that's my take on the matter.
