Subject: Why no niche stations?

Why can't the Wasatch Front support a niche station for more than a year? Look at my former favorite stations:

80's Modern (KJQ 2002, KISN 2001, KENZ 1999?)
70's (KCPX 2000 remember the dancing fat lady ad?)
Contemp. Jazz (KBZN mid 90's)
Techno/House/Electronica/Lounge (ever?)

I have fairly eclectic tastes, but I hope I'm not the only one who likes something other than Top 40 (whether hip hop, teeny bop, or "alternative"), Hard Rock, Easy Listening or Country.

I know that ratings are everything, but what's the difference between a niche station with a devoted following and yet-another-AC?

Of course, this is a geographic thing. When I've been in Europe, most of the stations are techno; classic rock like the Arrow is impossible to find.

Am I alone? Are there other missing formats I didn't list?
