""If the listener can't tell if you (as a DJ) are live or voicetracked, then you are a lousy DJ. Radio has dulled down through the seventies. I want someone who talks to the listener. Says a few things spontaneously, and takes a few live calls, or even slightly delayed calls. I want to listen to a radio station that DOESN'T sound perfect. I want to listen to people who (while still being professional) still sound like regular people and not some type of celebrity.""

All of the things you say, with the exception of live calls, are easily done through voicetracking. I've done plenty of voicetracking myself, and have had some hilarious mistakes that I left in there, because it was good radio.

I understand what you're saying, I'm not arguing really because hey, it's your opinion. That's totally cool. But having worked in the industry, after a while you come to the realization that radio is just a utility for most people. Most people have never, ever stopped to think that the station may be prerecorded.

A friend of mine voicetracks middays at a station (not in Salt Lake City), and in the last book she was #1 women 18-34 and #2 women 25-54. She sounds great, local, and leaves a few mistakes in there. The phone interaction is missing, yes. I think the difference is, she actually lives in the market that she voicetracks. To me, I'd rather have a locally voicetracked show, than say a live show delivered via satellite pretending to be local. Kind of a stretch of an example, but still.

Anyway, that's just my view.
