Two More LA Bus Operators Sign Up For Smart Cards
-----------------------------------------------------------
San Diego-based Cubic Transportation Systems, a subsidiary of Cubic Corp., says two more Los Angeles-area bus operators have signed contacts to equip 325 vehicles to accept a smart card that will be used on public transport throughout Los Angeles County. Cubic says the contracts with the Long Beach and Norwalk operators are worth $4.8 million and bring to $15.1 million the contracts Cubic has signed with eight LA-area bus operators to accept smart cards. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority last year awarded Cubic an $84 million contract to implement the county-wide smart card system. MTA buses and trains are scheduled to start accepting chip cards late next year, and the municipal operators a year later, an MTA spokesman says. He predicts some 500,000 riders will use the smart cards.
