Visa Cash Solution for Public Transportation Bill Powell San Francisco CA USA
------------------------------------------------------------
Visa's electronic purse product, Visa Cash, was introduced in April 1995. Since that time, the product, targeted to replace currency and coins for transactions of US$10 or less, has been implemented in 19 countries throughout the world. There are now over eight million cards in circulation.

Visa has formed relationships with technology partners around the globe to pursue the transport market. Along with its financial institution members, Visa's objective is to make Visa Cash the preferred open electronic purse scheme for automatic fare collection among transport agencies everywhere.

SIMPLIFIES FARE PAYMENT. The Visa Cash transport solution is a major milestone in the development of chip technology. It will allow consumers to ride trains, buses and ferries in the same or different transport systems, make telephone calls and buy coffee with the same card. It also accommodates various public transit fare payment options (pass, stored rides, fare by distance, intersystem transfer discounts, etc.). Consumers will no longer need a pocket full of cards or coins to perform these diverse transactions.

THE TECHNOLOGY. The product itself is relatively simple. The transport application and the Visa Cash electronic purse co-reside on the same chip card - called a combi-card. The transport application employs close proximity contactless technology and the Visa Cash application is contact-based, but includes a contactless interface. While passes, concession fare and fare by distance information is stored in the transport application, when there is a need for a rider to pay cash, the fare is deducted via the Visa Cash electronic purse.

MULTIPLE BENEFITS. This Visa Cash transport solution will enhance operating efficiency, increase security, reduce fraud, provide better ridership information and allow more pricing flexibility for transport agencies employing the technology. The Visa Cash transport approach represents a significant technology leap, and will play a large part in the future of automatic fare collection worldwide.
