JCB Hired Julie Krueger For Its US Expansion
------------------------------------------------------------
JCB has set its sites on broadening smart credit card acceptance in the US. To spearhead this initiative, JCB USA has hired Julie Krueger, Former Executive Director of the Smart Card Alliance and respected industry expert, as VP Smart Cards.
------------------------------------------------------------
Using Chip Cards To Expand Globally
------------------------------------------------------------
Card Technology
------------------------------------------------------------
Nov 19 2002 : JCB, the world’s fourth-largest card issuer, will pilot its J/Smart chip card in Hawaii, from January 2003, with First Hawaiian Bank, acting as the acquirer, and Vital, handling the card processing. Since Hawaii is a top destination for Japanese tourists, says Michael Cottrell, of Vital Processing, the location is seen as “a good launching point for chip card acceptance in the US”. If the pilot is successful, Cottrell believes “the [10 to 12] participating merchants will begin accepting all the chip card brands”, and “chip card processing [will] keep easing its way to the [US] mainland”.
------------------------------------------------------------
Although JCB’s J/Smart cards also carry loyalty applications, the pilot will only test the chip’s EMV-based payment application, according to Cottrell, who indicates about 700,000 of Vital’s merchants to accept JCB cards. JCB has also teamed with Singapore’s United Overseas Bank to ramp its local presence in the city-state, by issuing a co-branded, hybrid chip-and-mag-stripe card that supports both payment and loyalty functions. Cards used for purchases at the Bugis Junction shopping mall, are swiped for payments, while the chip supports the collection of loyalty points.
------------------------------------------------------------
These programs confirm JCB to be moving away from its traditional perception of a credit card for Japanese consumers, in an effort to gain a greater share of the global credit card market. Since JCB, like American Express, acts as a card issuer, acquirer and processor, payment innovations on its systems are potentially easier to implement and roll out. The chip in the Bugis Junction JCB Card, for example, stores data such as cardholder name, address, ID or passport number and loyalty details, and in time, like Hong Kong’s Octopus card, can extend to further functions.

First Hawaiian Bank parent's net up 19%
Paris >> BNP Paribas SA's fourth-quarter earnings rose 19 percent, making the French lender the only one of Europe's eight biggest banks to post higher profit in the period.
Net income climbed to 866 million euros ($752 million), or 1 euro a share, from 726 million euros, or 84 cents, in the year-ago period, Chairman Michel Pebereau said at a press conference.
------------------------------------------------------------
BNP benefited from a sixfold increase in investment gains and cost cuts from the 1999 takeover of Paribas SA.
------------------------------------------------------------
The bank's earnings have nearly tripled since it bought Paribas in 1999. Since then, the bank has been looking abroad for growth. In December, it became California's fourth-biggest lender after buying United California Bank from Japan's UFJ Holdings Inc. for $2.4 billion. It plans to combine the company with First Hawaiian Bank parent BancWest Corp., which it bought for $2.45 billion last year.
------------------------------------------------------------
"They did well, but don't expect a dazzling 2002," said Jacques-Antoine Bretteil, who manages about $700 million at International Capital Gestion, including BNP shares.
------------------------------------------------------------
Pebereau said the start of the year showed "an unfavorable and unstable economic and market context making it difficult to forecast results." The company's shares, which closed at a 52- week high yesterday, fell 1.7 percent today to 55.10 euros.
