The Hawaii Millennium Commission has selected Woodinville, Wash-based The Pathways Group to operate a Web site and a smart card program as part of Hawaii's Dawn of the New Millennium celebration that will run throughout 2000. The Web site will advertise events and products tied to the celebration and consumers who purchase event tickets will be sent smart cards through the mail carrying ticket information and merchant discounts. Commission officials say as many as 250,000 cards may be issued for use at 3,800 locations. Participating in the project are Hawaii's Retail Merchants Association, Restaurant Association, Hotel Association and Chinatown Merchant Association that together have 1,430 members. Pathways says it is negotiating with a major Hawaiian bank, which it would not name, to distribute the smart cards that will carry an electronic purse that consumers can load with money and use at shops and vending machines. Pathways earlier this year licensed the Proton e-purse system from the Belgian banking association Banksys S.A., but Pathways officials would not say if the Proton purse would be used in the Hawaii program.
