Two More U.S. Visa Issuers Are Ready To Offer Smart Cards

While economic uncertainty holds back rollouts, seven Visa issuers are prepared to offer smart cards, says Diana P. Knox, senior vice president of chip products at Visa U.S.A. That includes two unnamed and previously unannounced issuers that are keeping their smart card plans quiet. Knox says issuers want to be ready to offer smart cards, especially to co-branding partners. "If a good business opportunity comes along, they can respond quickly," Knox says. It would take at least four months for an issuer without a smart card infrastructure in place to get a chip card program rolling, she says. "That can be the difference between winning and losing a deal." Five U.S. Visa credit card issuers offer smart cards. They are: the Target Financial Services unit of retailer Target Corp., First USA, Providian Financial Corp., FleetBoston Financial Corp. and First National Bank of Omaha.
