Operations Review
The 2002/2003 financial year has seen the Company actively pursuing the successful commercialization of
its innovative technology.
The principal focus in the earlier part of the year was on the commercialization of the joint communication
technologies developed with OKI Electric Industry Company Limited (“OKI”) of Japan. The successful trial
of the joint technologies, of which Blaze’s facial animation software is a key component, during the year
culminated in the signing of agreements with OKI for the commercialization of the joint communication
technologies to the Japanese consumer market.
The principal terms of the agreements are as follows:
a) Mobile Phone Market
- Blaze granted OKI an exclusive right to commercialise the joint technologies in the Japanese
mobile phone industry
- Blaze will earn a 40% royalty on gross revenue from the sales and licensing of the joint
technologies
- Blaze received an advance royalty of approximately $100,000 during the year
b) Other Market Opportunities
- Blaze has extended rights and OKI has agreed to exclusively use Blaze’s facial animation software
in the development and commercialisation of applications in the other product groupings in Japan.
- Blaze will earn a 30% royalty on gross revenue from sales and licensing of jointly developed
products in these areas.
The Company has completed its work in respect of the joint technologies, and OKI are now actively
marketing the joint technologies in Japan.
The Company is now focussing on the significant opportunity for sales in mobile content area in Australia
and other Asian markets. Discussions are underway with a number of mobile network infrastructure
providers and telecommunications providers in the Asia Pacific region. The deployment of third generation
(3G) mobile networks in the region has not only fuelled interest in 3G applications, but also 2.5G application
providers – for which the Company’s technology is equally able to provide compelling content. 2.5G
network providers are looking to fully utilize the capabilities of their networks and take advantage of the
new colour screen handsets that are now hitting the market.
Following a downturn in traditional animation tool sales due to reduced spending across this market, the
Company has been focussing on applications for its animation technology in the Customer Relationship
Management (CRM) sector.
The push into providing animation technologies in the CRM space was given a considerable boost with the
launch of the Wizard Home Loans web site loan.com.au incorporating a famous3D virtual character.
Traditionally, completion rates and interest in online application forms has been poor. Wizard saw the
considerable potential in using a virtual character to assist customers complete application forms. By
guiding users through the lengthy forms, correcting errors, and providing feedback and explanations when
requested, a virtual character on their site provides a “human element”. This leads not only to an increased
application form completion rates, but also increased traffic to the site, and reduced costs as customers are
more inclined to complete applications online rather than through other more costly channels.
Similar deployments of virtual characters are currently being sought within a variety of organizations in,
among others, the financial, investment and utilities sectors.
A number of refinements to the Company’s technology were also completed during the year. These
developments are seen as the last few pieces in the technical jigsaw and the core technology can now be
readily adapted for numerous applications.
