NJ Transit Has Big Plans For E-Z Pass

By Anthony Johnson
(East Rutherford-WABC, May 29, 2003) — Buying hamburgers, theater tickets -- even paying for airport parking. All with your E-Z Pass.
Last year in New Jersey no one would have thought E-Z Pass had a bright future. Apparently a lot has changed in that time. There's even talk of using E-Z Pass transponders to stop at a turnpike rest-stop and buy food.

Could eating on the run get any better than that?

Tim Moore, E-Z Pass Customer: "It's not a bad idea, especially if you're in sales and you've got everything in one account ... mileage, meals, whatever."

And while at the pump, E-Z Pass could beat out SpeedPass to make it quick and simple to pay for your gas.

Michael Lapolla, NJ Turnpike Authority: "If they think it's convenient now, they're going to be amazed by how much more convenient it will be by early next year."

By then, there will be high-speed E-Z Pass at several tolls, and at the end of this summer users will be able to pay for parking at Newark Airport.

Marilyn Frierson, E-Z Pass Customer: "It's a good idea, because I was just trying to get money to pay for parking right now from the bank machine, and they didn't have no money."

And coming soon, no money will be no problem when you can use E-Z Pass for parking at Giants' Stadium. Or paying for entertainment, like theaters in New York City. That's just one of the futuristic plans that New Jersey officials are tossing around now that E-Z Pass is getting on track.

Michael Lapolla: "Having inherited an E-Z Pass system that lost money, millions of dollars on a daily basis, we're not going into any business unless we make money."

Robin Valinoti, E-Z Pass Customer: "I think it's a good idea. The only thing you'll need to be careful of is your credit card information, it's connected to E-Z Pass. And you know, a lot of times, numbers get stolen. But I think it would be convenient."

E-Z Pass officials admit it will take some time to expand the many uses of the system. One thing they want to make sure of is that E-Z Pass doesn't become an "E-Z Target" for thieves looking for credit card information.
