London Underground smartens up
01/07/2003
TranSys, a joint venture between Cubic and EDS, has announced that the first customers are now using the Oyster smart card service on the London Underground

From July, annual and monthly season ticket holders on London’s transport network will be able to purchase and use the Oyster smartcard system to travel across the UK’s capital city. It will mainly be used on the underground, but will also be accepted on overland and bus services.

Using Internet technology and AutoReload features, the Oyster smartcard is initially available over the Internet and by telephone. Cards are then automatically loaded at the gates of nominated tube stations. Oyster will tackle ticket fraud and provide faster passage through gates and onto buses in a travel system which has around six million users per day.

More than three million cards have been created and the infrastructure necessary to handle the anticipated five million transactions expected each day has been constructed.

Over a 15-month period TranSys has added 700 retailers to those already able to sell season tickets, extending the potential reach of the card, and streamlined financial procedures across the infrastructure achieving efficiencies and debt reduction targets. In addition, data centres have been rationalised to ensure that information can be stored securely, meeting and exceeding data protection and recovery mandatories.

Over the course of four years TranSys has also installed 16,000 remote ticketing devices (RTDs) on buses and tube gates across London, introduced a bespoke ‘Queue Buster’ fare machine, fitted gates on 270 stations to facilitate Oyster and equipped retailers and Train Operating Companies (TOCs) with smartcard reader equipment. A programme of staff training is also being supported to help ensure all staff are conversant with new equipment and software which has been installed in their workplace.

Speaking on behalf of the consortium TranSys Marketing Director Nicole Carroll said:
‘We have harnessed experience gained from cities including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Hong Kong to take integrated smartcard travel to a new level.

‘TranSys has risen to the challenge presented by what is arguably the most famous and complex transport system in the world and used it as an opportunity to showcase our skills and experience. Oyster is a ground breaking initiative which raises the benchmark for all other transport smartcard systems. In delivering it we have proved that TranSys is spearheading the development of integrated smartcard travel across the globe, showing our commitment to achieving client objectives and delivering a system which we hope will have strategic significance for London’s transport network in the future.’

Some 80,000 staff on London’s underground and buses have been using Oyster smartcards since November 2002, registering around 12 million Oyster transactions.
