Holders of annual and monthly season tickets for London's public transport network will be able to buy the Oyster smartcard online or via a dedicated phone line. The scheme will help combat fraud and speed up passengers' progress through ticket gates, says TfL. Up to five million Oyster transactions per day are expected to be processed during the first year of operation. Roll out of the technology will be phased. Some 16,000 remote ticketing devices have been installed on buses and tube gates, and by the end of the year the card will also be available through station ticket offices and selected retail outlets. News source: vnunet.com Next year, passengers will be able to 'charge up' the card remotely using the internet or telephone, or pay by direct debit at the end of the month for the journeys they have taken. 'This is a huge project and since autumn last year 80,000 people have been trialling the system,' said a TfL spokesman. 'With the numbers of people involved it would be foolish to go for a big bang so there will be a gradual, considered roll out through to spring 2004,' he said. The technical implementation is complete but there are on-going discussions with London train operators to ensure the Oyster card is interoperable with their plans for a smartcard, says TfL. TfL is also investigating putting the Oyster card chip into a mobile phone. 'We are keen to get the technology in place and up and running for public transport but the future benefits are endless,' said the spokesman.
