Date Posted: Friday, June 06, 02:51:29am U.S. Studies Adding Smart Card Chip To Passport The U.S. State Department is investigating the feasibility of embedding a contactless smart card chip into the U.S. passport in order to comply with standards recently set by the International Civil Aviation Organization. Richard McClevey, a representative of the State Department’s Passport Services Office, says the U.S. will work to meet the October 26, 2004, deadline imposed on major trading partners to have machine-readable biometrics in their travel documents. A law passed by Congress last year requires the 27 nations whose citizens can enter the United States without a visa to begin issuing travel documents carrying biometrics by October 2004 in order to remain in the Visa Waiver program. McClevey says the Passport Services Office has recently begun looking at ways to comply with the ICAO recommendation for using contactless chips to carry biometric data, a standard set by ICAO last month. He admits, though, meeting the October 2004 deadline will be a challenge. "I would like to have more time to do this," he says.
