Date Posted: Monday, January 13, 08:23:24am http://www.cardtechnology.com/cgi-bin/readstory.pl?story=20021112CTDN927.xml ------------------------------------------------------------ JCB To Test Smart Cards in Honolulu ------------------------------------------------------------ Tokyo-based JCB International Credit Card Co. will test its J/Smart smart card in Honolulu this January, says Thomas Wright, JCB executive vice president. Vital Processing Services will process the card transactions, and First Hawaiian Bank, a subsidiary of BancWest Corp., will act as the merchant acquirer. JCB chose to conduct the pilot in Hawaii because a number of Japanese vacations there, says Michael Cottrell, Vital’s senior vice president for alliance and services. "Hawaii is a top U.S. destination for Japanese tourists," he says. JCB, the world’s fourth-largest card issuer with more than 42 million cardholders, has issued 4 million smart cards since the first of the year, says Wright. Ten to 12 merchants, including restaurants and hotels, will participate in the pilot, and will use smart card terminals manufactured by Hypercom Corp., says Cottrell. While JCB’s J/Smart cards support non-payment applications such as loyalty, the pilot will only test the chip’s EMV-compliant payment application, says Cottrell. With Visa International’s and MasterCard International’s member banks in the Asia-Pacific region also beginning to issue chip-based credit cards, Cottrell sees Hawaii as a good launching point for chip card acceptance in the United States. "We anticipate that if the pilot goes well, the participating merchants will begin accepting all chip card brands, such as Visa and MasterCard," he says. "Chip card processing keeps easing its way to the mainland." About 700,000 of Vital’s merchants accept JCB cards, says Cottrell.
