I may have found the problem. After a tip from a police bike mechanic i removed the air box complete and found a bunch of wires and connectors and one was so corroded it fell apart. A quick clean up and cut and shut of the affending wire the bike starts every time. So next time you are in that area check your wiring, my bike is only a `99 D5 model.
