Clutch baskets have a set of springs integrated (not clutch springs), they act as a cushion when pulling away. As the springs deteriorate with use some bikes develop clutch judder. Also the rivets holding it all together become looser causing noice that usually goes away when the clutch lever is pulled in. I wouldn't necessarily blame difficulty changing gear on the clutch.
