Subject: Not sure Giamatti can carry the lead in a major film.

I like Giamatti, but at best he seems a supporting actor - i.e. to Russell Crowe in Cinderella Man. He was good in Sideways with Thomas Haden-Church, but suited the small-budget, subdued type of film that was.

I've actually equated actors to wrestlers in terms of stature - you have your jobbers, your mid-carders, and your main eventers. You cannont expect anybody but a main eventer to carry a mainstream commercial film. It just doesn't work.

Obviously, mid-carders can evolve into main eventers. Every now and then, they'll be pushed up into that echelon and be given their shot. You'll see them in a number of movies in a short period of time. Whether they take with audiences determines whether they become legitimate main eventers or go back to the mid-card.

Anyway, Giamatti's a midcarder. That's something M. Night Shyamalan should've realized. He's cast main eventers in all his other films - i.e. Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson, William Hurt, etc., and with no disrespect to Giamatti, that sort of star-power can occasionally help gloss over creative plotholes.
