This was not as horrible as I had anticipated. In fact, it was quite the contrary. Parker and Stone have always been pretty good at "taking their shots" at the establishment; be it government, the media, the entertainment industry, whatever. While the puppet novelty eventually wears off, there are certain scenes that are laugh-out-loud funny simply because of the puppetry. Whether it is hand-to-hand puppet combat, puppet sword-fighting, puppet kung-fu, or hot puppet sex (which resulted in the films "R" rating :} ), the absurdity of some of these scenes is hilarious when combined with real cinematic conventions like orchestral themes, over sound effects (including the Wilhelm!) or elaborate camera movements. The plot is standard adventure stuff, but is really just a means to an end to allow Stone and Parker to get their views across on certain things going on the world. I won't get into their politics because this isn't really the place, but it is clever enough. At least for the first time, I feel like I got my money's worth (yeah, it was free), but I still probably would've been OK with matinee price.
