Subject: I've seen some of these movies!
In reply to: Hugh Jazz 's message, "CATCHING UP: The Condemned, Spider-Man 3, 28 Weeks Later, Pirates 3, Shrek 3, Ocean's 13, Evan Almighty, Live Free or Die Hard AND Transformers" on 14:49:27 07/16/07 Mon

SPIDEY 3
Horrible, just horrible. I realize now there's a fine line between pulling off a guy in tights being a superhero and caricature, and Spidey 3 slipped into the latter. Too many plots, far too many contrivances, unnecessary reinvention of the mythology (Uncle Ben being killed by the guy who becomes Sandman) and actually felt the movie was hurt by the resolution in the final battle (won't give away spoilers). Terrible.

SHREK THE THIRD
Liked the first, didn't like the sequel. Had too many humans in it (which I find redundant for a Pixar movie). Didn't expect much but was very pleasant surprised. Pinocchio and the Gingerbread Man need their own franchises.

TRANSFORMERS
Good, but probably too long for this sort of movie (144 minutes). Completely unprepared for the appearance of John Turturro hamming it up. As HJ said, struck just the right balance between credibility and camp.

And one I'll add . . .

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX
Longest book, inexplicably the shortest movie. Good for what's there, but too many subplots are resolved (or seem left unresolved) abruptly. Probably really need to have read the book to understand what the hell's going on. Movie itself probably needs another 76 minutes to feel fully-rounded.
